One Direction started out life on popular UK TV show The X Factor, but unlike most stars of the reality series they found unrivalled success following the show, and singlehandedly revived the idea of the ‘boy-band’

Although following in the footsteps of many successful boy-bands, none have reached the heights or heard as much hysterical screams as One Direction. Selling millions of albums and singles they have taken the boy band to unprecedented levels, including movies, sell out world tours and presence on social media.

Made up of Irishmen Niall Horan and England’s Zayn Malik, Harry Styles Lois Tomlinson and Liam Payne, One Direction are well on their way to becoming the biggest boy-band of all time. They all competed on the same season of the X-Factor in 2010, yet as individual artist. A brain stroke of a move seen them grouped together to form the band we see today.

Simon Cowell was truly the mastermind behind the rise of the group, having signed them to his record label Syco upon the end of the show. Seeing the potential in their pin up looks, he produced catchy pop songs to go along with the look of your traditional boy-band.

Their first song and album followed in late 2011, with their debut album Up All Night marking the first time an album from a British band debuted at number one. The album was well received and praised for its catchy up-beat pop tracks with praise going to the production and overall sound. It would go on to sell 4.5 million copies worldwide.

In 2012 the band released their second album, which was again a commercial success. It went on to be the fourth bestselling album of the year. It topped the charts in over 35 countries, including the billboard 200, making them the first band in years to have their first 2 albums debut at number one. They toured extensively following it release, making millions in the process and confirming their status as the biggest boy-band in the world.

With youth and hunger on their side the band continued to power through, releasing their third album in 2013. As with the previous two, the album was a commercial success. It was also praised for its development of the band’s sound, featuring tracks written by all the members, and a more varied influence on the sound, from the generic pop of the previous two.

The year also saw the release of their own 3d film, with footage of their performances and tours of the previous year. It grossed almost $60 million worldwide, and is currently the fourth highest grossing concert movie ever.

2014 saw little change for One Direction, with the bands extensive touring culminating in the recording of their fourth studio album. Being released in November of that year, it yet again hit the top of the charts in many countries, including the UK and US.

With plans for a fifth studio album the band shows no signs of holding up. What direction their sound may take is anyone’s guess, one thing is for sure, it will sell a lot of copies.
