Minaj was born in Trinidad and Tobago, on December 8 1982, but moved to Queens New York st the age of 5. Her childhood was marred by her abusive drug addict father, who would try to kill Minaj’s mother in a house fire. These memories helped mould the woman we see today, as she seen her positions as motivation to escape the life that her parents had, as well as help define her female empowered personality.
In her early teens she would develop names and characters that could help her achieve her dreams, a lot of which involved going into to fantasy worlds inside her head, where many of the personas we see in her music were born. She wrote her first rap at the age of twelve, and new she wanted to be a performer from then on, enrolling at La Guardia High School of Music and Art.
She would continue to perform on the local music scene in New York, taking jobs as backup singers for local rappers, whilst still writing down her own material. Building her characters and styles of raps, she produced a lot of her own work onto her MySpace page, which would lead her to Fendi, the CEO of Dirty Money, who signed Minaj to his record label.
Her first mix tape was then realised in2007, and featured collaborations with Lil Wayne, who had taken a keen interest in Minaj, working with her on a number of mix tapes. ‘Playtime Is Over’ introduced the world the outrageous yet very skilled rapper/singer, offering us a glimpse of the star in the making.
Her first official single release followed in April 2010, with her upcoming album to follow in the fall. She was building up a significant following by this point, and there was a lot of anticipation for her debut record, with her unique sound and style, people simply couldn’t wait to hear what Nick Minaj had offer.
‘Pink Sunday’ came out in November of that year, and went on to sell 375,000 copies in its first week alone, and would be verified as platinum by December. Her stock would continue to rise over the months, as her album was not just a commercial but critical success too, with many praising Minaj for her rapping abilities. She would go on to do extensive tours, opening for the likes of Brittney Spears.
Her rise to stardom was fully acknowledged in 2012, when she performed at the coveted halftime Super Bowl show with the queen of pop, Madonna. This exposure, her appearances as a judge on American idol, along with the release of her second record ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded’ saw her become a household name. Her blend of hip-hop, pop and dance made her second album very popular, as it topped the charts and spawned several hits including ‘Starships’ and ‘Pound the Alarm’.
Her rise to fame has seen her try her hand at acting, appearing in her first feature film in 2013. Her third album was released in December of 2014, with the ‘Pinkprint’ going back to her Hip-hop based roots. The album was another smash hit, with the overall sound and production been praised by many.
