Motley Crue is not only known for their number of massive selling albums during the height of their powers throughout the 1980s, but for possibly the most rock and roll band off the stage also. With a hedonistic lifestyle, colourful personas and downright crazy partying, the band was one of the most popular acts emerging from the 80s.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1982, Motley Crue began life as a few sessions between bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee, before recruiting Mick Mars for guitar and vocalist Vince Neil to complete the line-up.

They would releases a self-titled album that was independently made by the band in 1981, it went under the radar in terms of sales, but drew the attention of Elektra Records, who retitled the album’ Too Fast for Love’. After releasing a second record named ‘Shout at the Devil’ in 1983, the bands third album ‘Theatre of Pain’ would prove to be their breakout record.

The album sold more than two million, and put them on the stage as one of the rock acts of the early 80s. Their live shows would become a thing of legend - with elaborate sets, lots of lighting and pyrotechnics along with lots of scantily clad dancers. It would epitomise the rock and roll lifestyle, with the band very much enjoying their success with all the classics, sex, drugs and alcohol.

Their newt two albums would prove their status as one of the biggest and most popular bands of the time, as both went on to become platinum selling releases.’ Girls, Girls, Girls’ and ‘Dr. Feelgood’ spawned a number of classic hits for Motely Crue and sold two and four million copies respectively.

The bands off stage antics were now a thing of legend, from celebrity marriages, heroin addiction to vehicular manslaughter charges as a result of drunk driving; the band had now become infamous for just how little regard they had for their own well-being.

The aforementioned car crash involved singer Vince Neil and resulting in the death of Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas Dingley. Despite spending only a few weeks in jail after paying $2.6 million in damages Neil was replaced with John Corabi in 1992.

It would prove to be short lived, as would any success in the following decade. The 90s saw a decline in popularity for Motely Crue, and Vince Neil was re-hired after only  2 years away, Despite the original line-up the band struggled to capture their essence in their newer releases, and so decided to take a hiatus.

They would return after five years away, with a new tour to promote their latest greatest hits ‘Red, White and Crue’ which featured some new singles too. After the tour and album were well received, Crue got back into the studio to record ‘Saints of Los Angeles’ in 2008. It debuted at the top ten of several album charts, and was preceded by a massive world tour.

It would prove to be the bands last album, as in 2014 Motely Crue announced a retirement tour of 70 dates. Covering most of the globe, the bands final concert is slated for the 31st of December 2015 and will be in the town it all began – Los Angeles.
