LA based Maroon 5 have been one of the most popular and enduring bands of the last decade. With 3 Grammy awards, over 17 million in album sales, and platinum hits in more than 35 countries worldwide, the success only continues to grow. An ever evolving sound that has its roots in pop and rock, one thing can be said of their music – it’s upbeat and very catchy.
Starting out in the mid-90s, band mates Adam Levine (vocals and guitar), Jess Carmichael (keyboards), Mickey Madden (bass) and Ryan Dusick began life as a band under the name of Kara’s Flowers. Whilst still only in high school the band released an album that was a flop.
This turned out to be blessing in disguise as after college the band reformed and now under the name Maroon 5, added a further member guitarist James Valentine. Hungry to make up for their earlier failure the band decided to alter their sound, with a more RnB and pop infused sound.
With the release of 2002s Songs about Jane the band had finally found a sound of their own, and one that was matched with great appreciation from fans and critics alike. The album was a huge success throwing the band into the mainstream. However it was not the overnight success you would assume.
It took almost 2 years for the album to hit the Billboard charts, eventually doing so in 2004. This can be attributed to the success of ‘This Love’ and ‘Harder to Breath’ found on the radio well over a year after the albums initial release. Better late than never though as new found exposure helped moved 2.7 million copies of the album, and culminated in them winning the 2005 Grammy award for Best New Artist.
Extensive touring as support and headlining artist eventually saw Maroon 5 loose original drummer Ryan Dusnick. After replacing him and finally recording their second studio album, 2007 saw the release of ‘It Won’t Be Soon before Long’. While not the smash hit of the first album it stills sold well, going double platinum and spawned hit single ‘Makes Me Wonder’.
Now a mainstay in popular music the band went on to release their 3rd album in 2010. ‘Hands All Over’ went platinum, and received more exposure after singer Adam Levine went on to appear on popular TV series The Voice.
Taking notice of the rise in sales, the band re-issued the album the following year, this time with song ‘Moves Like Jagger’, featuring Christina Aguleria. Who also featured on The Voice with Levine. The song soared to the top of the charts in several countries, with its poppy electro sound proving to be exceptionally popular, going on to the sell over 14 million copies.
Now well established as one of the most popular bands on the planet, the band continued their success with the release of 2012’s Overexposed. Spawning several hits including ‘Daylight’, ‘ One More Night’ and another smash hit ‘Payphone’ – that went on to be the fifth bestselling single of 2012.
Maroon 5 are keen to ride the waves of momentum, with another quick turnaround seeing the release of 2014s ‘V’. Debuting at number one, it sold 164,000 copies in its first week alone. Planning an extensive tour in 2015, the band is looking to cement their status as one of the best bands to come from the 2000s.
