Widely regarded the most successful female solo artist of all time, Madonna has been at the forefront of the music scene for over 30 years, and has well and truly earned the title of the ‘Queen of Pop’.

Madonna is well known for reinventing herself throughout her lengthy career, changes her style sound and looks many times over, keeping her relevant in an ever changing music scene. First appearing as a fresh face teen in the 80s, Madonna has become one of the most famous performers in the world, with a name recognised globally.

Born in Bay City Michigan, Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born to Italian American parents Tony and Madonna. Raised by devout Catholics, these early influences of her life would play a big part in moulding her style and sound during the early parts of her career.

This was further influences by the tragic death of her mother from breast cancer. As he was only five, Madonna struggled to understand the situation, but believes it played a large part in her outspoken character and later rebellious stage that shot her to stardom as a pop singer.

Starting out as a talented dancer, Madonna was always a hard and determined worker when starting out. Dropping out of college, she would further fall in love with performing on a trip to France in which she began to sign too.

After appearing in numerous bands she got her break in the 1980s, with the release of the song ‘Everybody’, which hit number one in the dance charts. She followed this up with debut album ‘Madonna’.

Her edgy look and provocative lyrics were not the norm of the male dominated music of the 1980s, but her popularity continued to rise, becoming a favourite of young girls across the country, and so a star was made.

She released follow up album ‘Like a Virgin’, which went straight to number one and confirmed her status as one of the biggest pop starts on the planet. After this she would begin her forays into film.

Her creativity knew no bounds, her image lyrics and even videos made waves across the music industry, no one had done this before, and with 17 consecutive tracks hitting the top ten billboard, her status as the biggest female performer in the world was complete.

Not just a talented performer, Madonna knew how to shock audiences. Her performance at the MTV awards in 1985 being a key highlight of her promiscuous persona. She would further add to her wild side with a turbulent marriage with actor Sean Penn.

Through all of her shock antics, she was still releasing bestselling catchy pop music, come the start of the 90’s she had earned well in excess of $1 billion in sales. This decade saw a removal from the wild Madonna with her reinventing her style and sound, a key aspect of her throughout her career.

This was matched by her success in the 2000’s, with a more electronic sound going through her albums, which still sold well, and even garner her 3 Grammy awards. Now established as a player in solo music, Madonna found a more mature sound and style moving on, which also included giving birth to her children.

Her marriage to Guy Ritchie and personal life over the next few years was massively followed by the media, as her relevance failed to disappear. She would continue with her unprecedented success of releasing bestselling albums and singles, which culminated in in 2009 with Forbes announcing her as the world’s wealthiest female musician.

Her business adventures out of music are well, including fashion and extensive charitable endeavours. Not stepping fully away from the music scene she continues to perform at many musical awards shows as well as guest appearances with some of the world’s hottest acts, proving her longevity in the industry.

Releasing an album in 2014, and continuing to tour well into her 50s, Madonna is quite simply unrivalled in her achievements. She has set the gold standard for successful female musicians, and shows no signs of giving up her well-earned crown of the queen of pop.
