Leonard Albert Kravitz, otherwise popularly known as Lenny Kravitz is an American rock musician, songwriter, record producer, an actor and a multi-instrumentalist. He was born in May 26, 1964 and his unique retro style infuses elements of soul, funk, jazz and hard rock. The multi talented singer is known for his intricate and elaborate music videos and stage performances.
Lenny Kravitz went against all odds to be the only male musician to ever win four consecutive Grammys in one category. He won the Grammys for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance from 1999-2002. He has been nominated for four other Grammy Awards as well as American Music Awards, BRIT Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and a few more, most of which he went ahead and won them.
Born to parents who were already on screen, (his mom was an actress and his dad was a TV producer), Lenny’s choice of career did not come as a surprise. He started showing interest in playing the drum when he was only 3. By the age of 5, he already wanted to be a musician. He practised playing the guitar, taught himself how to play the piano and he often says that his parents were ever so supportive of his musical ambitions encouraging him to pursue music. As a child, his favorite music group was the Jackson 5. He attributes his musical style to the influence of Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Gamble and Huff and the Isley Brothers.
He moved to Los Angeles in 1974 and it was here that he was first introduced to the world of rock music. He listened to Creedence, Black Sabbath, Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stone, Fela Kuti and Bob Marley – all who would later have a major influence on his musical style. His career debut was not very easy as he was turned away because record labels thought his style was neither black nor white. He recorded an album of his own and went ahead to collaborate and work with Karl Denson, a saxophonist. Under the management of Stephen Elvis Smith, Lenny had every major record label in a bidding war for him. In January 1989, he was signed to Virgin Records.
For the period spanning 1990-2002, Lenny Kravitz enjoyed immense popularity and success as his music and subsequent albums were well received internationally. His biggest single to date – It Ain't Over til Its Over, was at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2000, he released his most successful album, a Greatest Hits album, which became one of the most successful albums of the decade. He has worked with top artists like Madonna, Jay-Z, P-Diddy, Pharrell, and Katy Perry among others. After very many successful tours all over Europe and the Americas, Lenny Kravitz still draws large crowds of fans wherever and whenever he performs. He is an international sensation whose electrifying performances can never be forgotten.
