Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, or commonly known by her stage name Lana Del Ray, was born in New York, and grew up in the quiet village name Lake Placid. At the age of 18 she moved to New York City, where she would find her early influences and style that have made her one of the most popular singers in the world.
Performing as much a she could from her teens, she would take the stage at various bars and clubs, using numerous stage names, most notably Lizzy Grant, before settling on her unique stage name that she wanted to fit her exotic sound.
Finding moderate success with a small label, she would go on to release some tracks under the name Lizzy Grant, going as far to releasing an album in 2008 titled Lana Del Rey aka Lizzy Grant. After that she decided to fully concentrate on Lana Del Rey, tailoring her voice and music to the sultry sounds we know her for today.
She finally made her breakthrough when she co-wrote and performed the song ‘Video Games’ which would be uploaded onto YouTube, and would go on to gain millions of views, exposing her to a worldwide audience.
Her fist full length album with a proper release followed in 2012, with the massively popular ‘Born to Die’. It would become very popular, particularly in the United Kingdom where it debuting at no 1. Her brooding vocals and great visionary lyrics gave her a real distinct sound, which was further accentuated with her style and demeanour.
The album garnered many hits, solidifying her spot as one of the hottest new acts in pop music, one with her own distinct style and sound that was a far cry from the rest of the popular music available.
Whilst massive in the UK, it took a little longer to become recognised fully in her home country, it took a remix of her track ‘Summertime Sadness’ in 2013. It went on to become a sleeper hit, getting her a number 6 spot, her highest so far.
Now firmly established as one of the most talented voices going, her work would begin to go into new areas, including producing songs for movies, including Maleficent and the Great Gatsby. Her follow up album ‘Ultraviolence’ came out in 2014, debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200.
It was met with rave reviews and has so far sold more than 3 million worldwide. She has planned tours to help further promote her new album, and shows no signs of letting up. Her work as crossed over into films and modelling and she is yet to turn 30.
Undoubtedly one of the most talent singers to come appear in the last five years, Lana Del Rey still has plenty of herself to showcase, and many can’t wait to hear what she has on offer next. She announced her new album for some time in 2015, a quick turnaround. Her delightfully distinct voice and deep meaningful lyrics make her a favourite among many, and she has plenty more to come.
