One of the most well known Canadian music acts, the "Barenaked Ladies" or BNL were formed in 1988, initially as a duo by Ed Robertson and Steven Page, who came up with their unique band name while fooling around during a Bob Dylan concert. Their very first gigs were mostly random and improvised but realising their great chemistry on stage they kept on performing and progressed to writing their own music and lyrics and recording a few demos with the characteristic comedic element that still represents the band. Along the way they reunited with two music camp buddies, the brothers Andy and Jim Creeggan, who would then take charge of the keyboards and base respectively, and after a few months Tyler Stewart would complete the band serving as their drummer to this day.
Despite their first official album being released in 1992, called "Gordon", they actually became quite popular in Canada about a year before that with a demo tape: "The Yellow Tape". While they had no luck selling their tape to a label, they managed rather unintentionally and unexpectedly to cause buzz over their name, which had more to do with a social/political misinterpretation rather than music. Nonetheless their popularity and sales gained a significant boost and in 1992 they released "Gordon", featuring some of their most beloved songs such as "If I Had $ 1,000,000", "Brian Wilson" and "Be My Yoko Ono".
Their two following albums, while not managing to match their previous album's success, produced a few hits like "The Old Apartment|, and moreover at the time between the two releases Andy Creeggan decided to take off, with Tyler Stewart fully taking over percussion and later bringing in the band's present keyboardist Kevin Hearn.
Their release of a live album, "Rock Spectacle", from their tour gigs in 1996, they became increasingly popular to a wider audience, in particular in the United States, thus preparing the ground for their next creative and subsequently successful music steps. "Stunt" was their fourth studio album which included the band's major hit in the States and worldwide, "One Week". Combining their fun pop-rock sound with their distinctive comic touch, "One Week" paved the way for a series of great live concerts, tours and successful albums that would be released in the following years. However, a major role in their worldwide fame played without a doubt their contribution of the theme song for the popular sitcom "The Big Bang Theory". The speedy and quirky song became an international phenomenon and a treasure for the band.
In 2009, original band member Steven Page officially departed from the BNL, but the band continued working and doing shows, releasing 3 albums as a quartet, with generally good response from critics and audiences. Thanks to their high versatility in projects and their unique fun and witty presence, the Barenaked Ladies have the talent to offer worthwhile and entertaining shows, while still having great things in store for the future!
